Clear or Frosted? Choosing the Right LED for Pinball Inserts
When replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs in a pinball machine, one common question is:
Should you use clear or frosted LEDs for playfield inserts?
A discussion shows that there is no single answer—the best choice depends on the lighting effect you want.

Clear vs. Frosted LEDs

The main difference is how the light is distributed.
Clear LEDs produce a stronger and more concentrated light. They can make small inserts look bright and sharp, but may also create a noticeable hotspot.
Frosted LEDs diffuse the light, creating a softer and more even appearance. This makes them especially useful under playfield plastics, clear inserts and general illumination where uniform lighting is preferred.

A simple way to think about it is:
Clear lens are brighter and more focused, while frosted lens are softer and more even.

For this reason, many pinball players prefer single-chip frosted LEDs for inserts, particularly when they want to reduce visible hotspots.

Colored LED or White LED?

Another choice is whether the LED color should match the insert.
Matching colors can make the insert appear richer and more saturated.

However, some players prefer using white LEDs behind colored inserts, allowing the insert itself to create the color. This can sometimes produce a brighter and more natural-looking result.

There is no strict rule here—it depends on the machine and the visual style you prefer.

Which Should You Choose?

Ultimately, the brightest LED is not always the best choice. For pinball lighting, light distribution is just as important as brightness.
If you want a softer and more traditional appearance, start with a frosted LED. If you want stronger and more concentrated light, a clear LED may be the better choice.
